Lehigh Valley Zoo becomes a winter wonderland

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is looking more like a winter wonderland.

Volunteers at the zoo have transformed it into a frozen fantasyland, complete with more than 600,000 LED Christmas lights.

"They have been here, I would say eight to 12 hours a day for the last month putting this together," said Melissa Borland, President and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Zoo.

The event features 12 exhibits, including a scene from Frozen.

Crews also constructed a glacier set for simulated snowball fights.

Kids can roast marshmallows by the fire, or shoot them from a gun.

"We created a big hot chocolate mug where you can take a marshmallow shooter," Borland said.

There is also a 12-foot walk-in snow globe and a holiday-themed dance floor.

The exhibit opens November 15 and runs through January 10.

Health Beat: Sickle cell: Stopping kids' silent strokes

Twelve-year old Alexis Haynes has come a long way. At age six, a sudden stroke put her in a coma for a full month.

"The doctors told us that she wouldn't be able to walk, she wouldn't be able to talk, she wouldn't remember us," said Kelvin Haynes, Alexis' father.

Every six weeks, Alexis spends hours getting her blood transfused. New red blood cells replace her sickle-shaped ones. While Alexis' stroke was apparent, experts say one in three children with sickle cell suffer silent strokes.

"These are injury to parts of the brain that don't control speech, they don't control movement in an arm or a leg, so they typically go unnoticed," said Dr. Michael Noetzel, pediatric neurologist at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis.

These kids have a higher risk of memory problems. Many have trouble at school. They're also at much higher risk for having a major stroke.

Noetzel studied 196 children age five and older, who had brain scans that showed evidence of silent strokes. For three years, 99 received monthly transfusions, the rest did not. Researchers found the transfusions reduced the risk of strokes of any kind by 58 percent.

"Now that we have an intervention at hand, that could be helpful. There's no reason not to think about screening younger children," Noetzel explained.

Identifying kids at risk before any damage is done.

Risks from transfusions include infections, reactions to donated blood and buildup of iron in the bloodstream. Researchers are planning longer-term studies to see whether transfusions, in combination with other sickle cell treatment options, like stem cell transplantation, can help prevent kids from losing cognitive function.

In a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Mack Trucks Inc. has agreed to pay a $54,800 penalty and to properly manage the hazardous waste at its truck assembly plant in Macungie.

The fine settles the alleged violations of hazardous waste regulations.

After inspecting the facility, the EPA cited Mack for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) violations governing the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste.

According to the EPA, the RCRA is designed to protect public health and the environment, as well as avoiding costly cleanups by requiring the safe, environmentally sound storage and disposal of hazardous waste.
