Life Lessons: 5 things successful people do

Ever feel like you are just stuck in a routine or just getting by? That isn’t the way to accomplish your dreams.

A change in attitude and putting your goals in check can make all the difference.

ere is what successful people do:

First off, successful people don’t just go to work, they go to work to prosper.

They go to work to accomplish tasks and work towards their dreams, not to just get their hours in.

Successful people all have drive.

That means you must push and shove until you get what you want. Never settle and don’t let anything get in the way.

Also don’t make excuses because they won’t change the outcome.

When things go wrong, use that as an opportunity not a hurdle to get past.

Finally focus on your daily goals.

Successful people always focus on success. Make goals everyday so that you can see that your goals can be accomplished.

And by having your goals in reach, success can be closer than you think.

Also successful people are willing to fail.

You have to take risks in order to receive rewards, which means that sometimes you might fail.

When you accept that failure, you can keep working and believing in yourself to try and succeed instead of staying down.

Man recently charged in $20 million insurance fraud scheme commits suicide

A member of a prominent Bucks County family accused in a $20 million insurance fraud case committed suicide Thursday

According to Buckingham Township Police, Thomas French, the husband of family matriarch Claire Risoldi, took his own life at his Doylestown-area home today.

French and his wife Claire, along with Claire's daughter Carla, her son Carl and his wife Sheila, were all charged last month on charges of theft and corruption.

Prosecutors said they set fire to their massive Buckingham Township mansion to fraudulently collect millions in insurance claims and, as a result, live a lavish lifestyle.

Police arrest a trio accused of steal copper and burning hom

Three people have been arrested, including one Berks County man, accused of stealing copper from vacant homes and setting them on fire.

Police say it happened at 27 different homes across Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.

One of the homes was in the 1200 block of Wilson Street in Pottstown. There neighbors woke up on March 17, 2014 to see the home completely ablaze.

"The Rosedale section is a very quiet neighborhood and it caused quite a panic in that area," said Chief F. Richard Drumheller, Pottstown Police.

Now almost a year later, police say they have found the individuals responsible.

Police first arrested Ryan Nelson, 22, and Megan Gawel, 20, for a burglary in Spring Township.

During that arrest, officers executed a search warrant on their cell phones. They say they found evidence that suggested the suspects searched for vacant homes for sale online, plugged the addresses into their GPS and were physically in the area during the time of the fires.

"Twenty six and half years ago when I started here they gave you a pair of handcuffs, a stick and a gun. Police work has grown out of that and it is wonderful with the technology that we have the ability to check cell phones," said Drumheller.

Police were also able to connect Kevin Colosimo Jr., 36, of Douglassville to the crimes.

All three stand accused of stealing copper and setting fire to 27 homes throughout Montgomery, Delaware and Chester Counties.

All of their bails were set at $1,000,000.

"The district justice looked at the crime for what it was and saw the terror that they caused our community and he acted appropriately," said Drumheller.

All three suspects were charged with criminal conspiracy, burglary, arson and theft.

Area homeless receive anonymous donation of cold weather clothing

A local nonprofit received a heart-warming gift today in the face of bone-chilling cold.

An anonymous donor to the Allentown Rescue Mission shipped several large cases of military-style cold weather gear to the nonprofit agency today.

Upon receiving the donation, the Mission said it immediately reached out through its network of peer agencies to plan distribution.

All agencies are planning to concentrate their efforts on the homeless who live outdoors in makeshift encampments.

Local snack maker says A-Treat can succeed

There's talk of Allentown's A-Treat getting a revival, nearly two weeks after it fizzled out.

But what would it take for the family-owned beverage company to be a success story once again?

Bill Corriere owns Keystone Food Products in Lehigh County's Lower Nazareth Township.

The snack food company pushes out nearly one million pounds of product every week, and has been around nearly 80 years.

The factory continues to pump out old and new products, despite more and more activity from larger national companies too.

Corriere said his secret is refusing to compete.

"I don't even want to be on their radar," Corriere said.

Instead, Corriere said his company focuses on creativity, adding that customers are willing to pay a little bit more for a brand they love.

"We are always creative, looking at new snacks constantly, all the time," Corriere said.

Corriere also said he invests in the best equipment money can buy.

"We are constantly buying new equipment that makes more product, at better quality, at lower cost," Corriere said.

It's those simple business practices Corriere would emphasize to anyone who may consider taking over A-Treat.

"I think that company can get back on its feet," Corriere said.

But for that to happen, Corriere said some changes will need to be made.

"Possibly some different packaging, and definitely some promotions," Corriere said.

Though, he went on to say that drastic alterations won't likely work out.

"They are great because of their unique flavors. I buy A-Treat because I can't get those flavors from Coke," Corriere said.

The only way to keep a tradition going he said, is to keep the tradition.

Cold weather can take its toll, on your smartphone

The winter weather can wreak havoc on your smartphone.

While many of us have them, we might not take the proper precautions and care to keep our devices protected in the cold.

"Winter is notorious for killing lithium-ion batteries," said Josh MacGown, the founder of Mobile Genius, a smartphone and tablet repair company with locations in Allentown and Bethlehem.

"A large portion of our business in the winter is snow accidents," he said.

MacGown said when you're outside, keep your phone as close to your body as possible to prevent problems.

"If it's cold and goes into a hot environment then it will cause condensation within, in the inside of the phone, which is technically water damage," he said. "You wouldn't know until it died, if someone opened it up and told you or things just started failing on the device."

If you take a spill on the ice, you may not be the only thing bumped and bruised.

MacGown said they see shattered screens and other results of mishaps.

"When you slip and fall on ice, they're coming in with more damage to the aluminum frame that the 5 and 5s is built on," he explained about certain iPhones.

If your phone shuts down because of the cold, give it some time to warm up before you try to restart it to avoid battery damage.

While it can be extremely difficult to part with your device, MacGown says to leave it inside before you go out to shovel.

"The number one mistake is people put it in their pocket and then they're shoveling snow, an hour goes by and it's time to make a phone call and there's no phone to be found," he said. "We've had customers lose their phone in January, February cleaning snow, find it in the spring and then bring it in for water damage repair."

There are cases that will protect the exposed ports on your phone for an added layer of protection.

MacGown explained what happens when snow gets in those openings.

"Most of the time it's the charging port that it goes into first which will kill the phone and then it starts going into the headphone jack and home button censors," he said.

If you do bring your phone with you outside, MacGown recommends arm bands that seal the phone.

Outdoor workers know how to stay warm

Not everyone has the luxury of staying in the warm indoors on a frigid night.

Some were out on Thursday night, braving the cold to earn a paycheck.

Pizza delivery guys must go outdoors to deliver pizzas to customers.

"You just have to keep your car nice and warm and try to be outside only a couple minutes at a time," said Nick Hoatz of Lehigh Pizza.

Other workers we spoke with, are forced to be brave the elements for much longer stretches.

Bethlehem Parking Authority's valet employees tsaid they have staying warm down to a science.

"Layers and layers and handwarmers and footwarmers," said Jennifer Hertzog.

Workers also try to take frequent breaks inside.

"We spend as much time as we can indoors and in customers' cars," said Hertzog.

Tow truck drivers also spend nights in the bitter cold. In fact oftentimes, these frigid temperatures make for the best business.

"I parked here on the side of the road and I got stuck in the ice," said Jay Frankett. "I had to call a tow truck."

All the workers we spoke with say while they love their job all year round, they are counting down the days until the warmer weather.

Teenager to be sentenced in deadly-crash case

A Lehigh Valley teenager awaits sentencing for her involvement in a deadly crash which took the life of a 65-year old woman.

Nineteen-year-old Courtney Quinn was accused of speeding on Route 145 in North Whitehall Twp. back in April when her car crossed the center line and struck another vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle, 65-year-old Jennifer Ebert was killed in the crash.

Quinn pleaded guilty Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and traffic offenses.

The homicide by vehicle charge against her was withdrawn as part of the plea deal.
