Prosecution rests in trial of man with bodies in yard

The prosecution has rested its case in the trial of a man accused of strangling a Pennsylvania pharmacist and the pharmacist's girlfriend and burying them on his property next to several other bodies.

Hugo Selenski is charged with killing Michael Kerkowski and Tammy Fassett as part of a plot to steal tens of thousands of dollars made from illegal prescription drug sales.

Prosecutors called their last witness Wednesday. A jeweler testified that Selenski bound him with plastic ties during a 2003 robbery, the same kind of ties that prosecutors said Selenski used to strangle Kerkowski and Fassett.

Kerkowski had pleaded guilty and was about to be sentenced when he and Fassett were reported missing in May 2002. Their bodies were among at least five found on Selenski's property a year later.

Selenski has pleaded not guilty.

Health Beat: Smart app for psychosis: Ginger IO

The 20-year-old we'll call "Isaac" was diagnosed with schizophrenia a year ago.

"It terrified me. I didn't know if I could talk to any of my friends about it," he said.

"Isaac" suffered hallucinations and heard voices in his head.

"When I heard the first voice that started talking to me was my scariest moment when I realized, 'Oh, this is something that I can't just cope with and white knuckle. This is something that I need to really get help with,'" "Isaac" recalled.

He did get help with medication and therapy, and "Isaac" was also recently introduced to a new app. Ginger IO is designed to monitor patients with psychosis.

"To see if we can intervene earlier before they have a relapse or before things get worse," said Tara Niendam, clinical psychologist of UC Davis School of Medicine.

Nearly 80 percent of psychosis patients will relapse within the first five years of diagnosis.

Niendam said the new app collects data about the number of texts and phone calls they make and receive and where they travel in a day.

"Whether a person is getting up and getting out of the house and going places," explained Niendam.

Doctors can track patient's patterns on a "dashboard" and see how they are doing daily and can contact patients at the first sign of trouble.

"Isaac" says it's helped him stay on track.

"They really helped give me a sense of positivity," "Isaac" explained.

He's using his music as therapy and facing his illness one day at a time.

The researchers at UC Davis are conducting a pilot study to see if the app can prevent relapses. They will also test the effectiveness of the app over 12 months in as many as 120 patients.

Will sale of A-Treat fizzle or pop?

A long-time Allentown bottling company may get a second chance at life.

The A-Treat Bottling Company, located at 2001 Union Blvd., closed its doors on January 23, after nearly 100 years in business.

The company made 32 different flavors of soda, according to its website, and had distributed its product to various retailers like Walmart, and Redners Warehouse Markets.

Thomas Coombs, former owner of the Bangor General Store, says he is interested in buying the A-Treat company with some unnamed partners, but can't seem to get in touch with company officials.

He told 69News he has called the A-Treat vice president but hasn't had any luck reaching him.

Coombs said he has two products he'd like to produce at A-Treat, including a Hispanic beverage.

A-Treat was fined nearly $130,000 in February 2013 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for 14 repeat and two new workplace safety and health hazards.

According to the company's website, A-Treat was founded in 1918 by Joseph and Jack Egizio in a garage in downtown Allentown.

A-Treat moved to its current location in 1932.
