Allentown City Council Wednesday unanimously approved the hiring of its first-ever woman to the position of chief city solicitor.
The position was recently vacated by attorney Jerry Snyder of Allentown, who is retiring.
Attorney Susan Ellis Wild of South Whitehall Township, currently a partner and former managing partner at the Allentown law firm of Gross McGinley, LLP since 1999, was nominated for the solicitor's opening by Mayor Ed Pawlowski.
According to her company profile, the trial attorney has been practicing law in the Lehigh Valley since 1988, and her areas of specialization include medical malpractice defense, municipal litigation, and civil rights and employment law.
In addition, she has previously defended both the cities of Allentown and Bethlehem in civil cases.
Wild received her bachelor's degree from American University in Washington, D.C. and her juris doctorate with honors from the George Washington University School of Law.
Her bar admissions include Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
According to her resume, in 2013 she was selected one of the top "50 Women Lawyers in PA" and named a "Pennsylvania Super Lawyer" for the past four years.
A past president of the Lehigh County Bar Association, Wild is also a certified civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
Following council's unanimous vote for her approval, Wild commented, "I'm extremely enthusiastic about this position." She pledged to provide meaningful and effective legal representation to Allentown including serving both city council's and the administration's legal needs.
Although despite questions and concerns voiced at the meeting by council and residents about how effectively she would be able to represent both council and the administration, Wild restated her commitment of impartiality saying she "has to do what is legally correct and what's best for the city now."
She commented the greatest challenge to be faced in her new position will be "to keep up with the strides the city has made in recent times."
The chief solicitor's position pays an annual salary of $55,000.
Wild will be responsible for overseeing three full-time associate city solicitors in her new office.
She said she would continue working for Gross McGinley but with a somewhat reduced caseload. She added her solicitor's position is considered part-time.
She has two children: 21-year-old Clay, a senior at George Washington University and Adrienne, 18, a freshman at Kutztown University.
