The Berks Technical Institute hosted a full-scale Active Shooter Training Drill for local, state and SWAT team officers, Wednesday morning.

Approximately 50 police officers as well as other first responders participated in the drill.

"I want to throw a lot at the patrol officers. We have role carriers here. So like I said, we're going to make it as real as possible," said Officer Richard Karstein, Wyomissing Police Dept.

The drill comes on the same day that officers halfway around the world in Paris, France, dealt with several active shooter.

Three armed men with possible ties to al-Qaida, methodically assassinated 12 people, including two police officers, at the office of a satirical newspaper that caricatured the Prophet Muhammad, officials confirm.

Back in December, Australian authorities also faced off with a jihadist who held more than a dozen people hostage in a busy downtown cafe in Sydney.

Three people died in that incident.

These are reasons why officials in Berks County say this training is more important than ever before.

"I thought it was a great idea, because you never know when this is going to happen. It's a scary situation, and it can happen any place," said Kyle Snyder, a student studying criminal justice.

With active-shooter situation becoming more common around the world, local officials said preparation could make all the difference.
