That's not something you hear a lot in any state at any level, and the Stateliner players know what that would mean to have that as part of their legacy.

Slate Belt police chief preparing for changes

The Slate Belt Regional Police Department will take over coverage of three municipalities in Northampton County next month.

It's been a hectic three months for the new chief, David Mettin.

"I see a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s good," said Mettin. "We should be up and running, hopefully by January."

Mettin is the former chief of the Pennridge Regional Police Department in Bucks County.

The new department will cover Wind Gap, Pen Argyl, and Plainfield Township.

"The police departments are going to combine into one, but the one police department is going to have a larger footprint," Mettin said.

The officers will have new uniforms, and there is grant money to improve the office space, evidence room, and locker room for the 22 officers who will make up the force that has headquarters in Plainfield Township.

"We're not losing any officers," said Mettin. "Every full-time officer is with the original departments have been offered a job or a position here, so that's number one."

Mettin said he is still looking for input from the public because when Slate Belt Regional takes over in January, he knows what issues officers should address.

"The more people that call, the more people that stop by, the more people that email, the better it is for the police department," added Mettin. "They better. It's going to be for the community because we'll be responsive to those types of needs."

The department expects the full changeover to be done by mid-January, but new black and white Slate Belt Regional police cars should be on the streets later this month.

Fleetwood girls coming off historic season

With two Berks football teams still playing, it's easy to forget that high school hoops tips off tonight. The Fleetwood girls are coming off the best season in program history.

The Tigers look to take a positive first step Friday in the opener of their own tournament against Manheim Central.

Fleetwood won 24 games last season, making appearances in the county final, district semis and the second round of states.

Fleetwood lost some of that talent from last year, but they have enough weapons back that will keep the Tigers in the championship hunt.

Fleetwood is coached by Matt Kellett and will be led by seniors Cyre Virgo and Izzy Mullen.

Wilson WL excited for semifinal showdown with Pine-Richland

14-0 and a District 3 championship at the quad-A level. Not bad for a team that lost its entire starting offense and only returned four defensive starters. Wilson has once again proved the strength and depth of its program this year. Next up, unbeaten Pine-Richland on Saturday with a berth in the state finals at stake.

The Bulldogs will face one of their toughest tests of the season Saturday, perhaps their toughest since week 1 against Governor Mifflin.

The Rams boast a number of Division I athletes on the offensive side of the ball, one of the strongest offenses in the state.

But Wilson has been a gritty, blue-collared team all year. The wins haven't been pretty all the time, but they've won with defense and timely offense. A winning formula in the postseason.

This Bulldog team did not enter the year with sky-high expectations, given what the team lost to graduation. But Doug Dahms and his staff have once again produced a winner and a team that plays with a tremendous amount of "heart."

Kick-off is set for 1:00 in Altoona on Saturday.

Interviewed - Doug Dahms, Senior Connor Howell, Senior Chris Zerbe.

Story written and produced by Dan Moscaritolo.

Thousands of pounds of food collected through drive

Hundreds of people in the Lehigh Valley will have food on their tables this holiday season thanks to donations.

More than 13,000 pounds of food was delivered to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Allentown on Friday.

The food was collected through the Toyota Tundra Food Drive. The director of Second Harvest said hunger is a silent disability.

"Children who don't eat a nourishing meal can't study, can't learn. Adults who are working, who are hungry, have a hard time concentrating on the job, and no senior citizen should ever have to make a choice between turning up thermostat two degrees and having food on the table," said Ann McManus, the food bank's director.

WFMZ-TV was one of the sponsors of the drive.
