Slate Belt police chief preparing for changes

The Slate Belt Regional Police Department will take over coverage of three municipalities in Northampton County next month.

It's been a hectic three months for the new chief, David Mettin.

"I see a light at the end of the tunnel, and it’s good," said Mettin. "We should be up and running, hopefully by January."

Mettin is the former chief of the Pennridge Regional Police Department in Bucks County.

The new department will cover Wind Gap, Pen Argyl, and Plainfield Township.

"The police departments are going to combine into one, but the one police department is going to have a larger footprint," Mettin said.

The officers will have new uniforms, and there is grant money to improve the office space, evidence room, and locker room for the 22 officers who will make up the force that has headquarters in Plainfield Township.

"We're not losing any officers," said Mettin. "Every full-time officer is with the original departments have been offered a job or a position here, so that's number one."

Mettin said he is still looking for input from the public because when Slate Belt Regional takes over in January, he knows what issues officers should address.

"The more people that call, the more people that stop by, the more people that email, the better it is for the police department," added Mettin. "They better. It's going to be for the community because we'll be responsive to those types of needs."

The department expects the full changeover to be done by mid-January, but new black and white Slate Belt Regional police cars should be on the streets later this month.
