Final plans to construct new athletic fields and expand one of DeSales University's halls were approved Monday night by Upper Saucon Township officials at their board of supervisors regular meeting.

According to Robert Snyder, DeSales vice president of finance and administration, the university has been working on plans with Upper Saucon planners since the middle of 2013.

The plans include expanding and modernizing Billera Hall which hasn't seen any major changes since 1968, although a field house was added in 1997, he noted.

Currently measuring 82,500 square feet, Billera Hall serves as the headquarters for DeSales athletics and consists of gymnasiums, basketball courts, a fitness center and locker rooms.

Expansion plans referred to as a "northwest wrap" by Snyder will first include a 36,000-square-foot addition to Billera containing a new wellness center with cardiovascular equipment, weights and team locker rooms.

He said the second addition to the hall of another 40,000-square-feet on its west side will primarily house new locker rooms.

Along with the expansion and modernization of Billera, Snyder said two new artificial turf athletic fields will be built west of it. In addition, two new natural practice fields and a new track complex and field will be located south of Station Avenue.

Further plans to upgrade the softball field located north of Preston Lane will include seating, press box, and backstop improvements.

Snyder said work on the fields is expected to begin this April with completion scheduled for this fall.

The work on Billera will begin in the summer of 2016 following fundraising efforts by the university, he said.

DeSales currently consists of 1,600 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students with another 1,000 enrolled in its degree completion programs.
