GOP-endorsed candidates for Pa. high court face primary foes

The Republican State Committee has endorsed candidates for three openings on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, but that doesn't mean they'll be the only ones on the May primary ballot.

Adams County President Judge Michael George, Superior Court Judge Judy Olson and Commonwealth Court Judge Ann Covey won the committee's endorsements for the nominations Saturday.

But at least two other appellate judges say they're running.

Supreme Court Justice Correale Stevens, whom former Gov. Tom Corbett appointed to fill a vacancy left by a resignation, says he's running but didn't compete for an endorsement because it would be inappropriate for a sitting justice.

Superior Court Judge Cheryl Allen also is vowing to run against the party favorites.

Allen says GOP voters decide the nomination, not the state committee.

1 cup Mayonnaise

1/2 cup Sour Cream

2 tablespoons Chopped Fresh Chives

Grill the wings on your grill for about 2 minutes on each side, then place on a sheet pan sprayed with non-stick spray and hold in your refrigerator until ready to finish the cooking.

Grilling them ahead of time but not completely cooking them gives you the flavor of grilling & the ease of finishing in the oven.

In an oven preheated to 425 degrees, place your wings for about 15 minutes, flip over then cook for another 15 minutes, until they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

For extra crispy wings, finish under the broiler for the last 5 minutes.

Remove from the oven & toss with your favorite sauce.

Lawmaker proposes naming I-84 exit after slain Pa. state trooper

A Pennsylvania state senator is proposing to name an exit on Interstate 84 in the Pocono Mountain region for a state trooper slain nearby while on duty.

Sen. Lisa Baker said Friday she has introduced a bill to name Exit 30 for Cpl. Bryon Dickson, who was shot to death in September at a state police barracks about a mile away.

Eric Frein is accused of killing Dickson and wounding Trooper Alex Douglass. He's pleaded not guilty and awaits trial in Pike County.

It took authorities 48 days to find Frein, who was arrested by U.S. marshals at an abandoned airfield in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Baker says the designation will remind passing motorists of Dickson's service to the public.

GOP to consider endorsements for three high court openings

Pennsylvania Republican Party leaders are weighing whether to take sides in a potentially crowded race for an unprecedented three openings on the state Supreme Court.

The GOP state committee is meeting at a Harrisburg hotel Saturday to decide whether the committee should endorse candidates in the May 19 primary. If so, votes will be taken to decide who is endorsed.

Eight candidates are seeking endorsements--an appointed Supreme Court justice, three state Superior Court judges, two state Commonwealth Court judges, a county judge and a county district attorney.

A seat on the state's highest court carries a 10-year term and a salary that's currently more than $203,000 a year.

Six Democrats also are running. The Democratic State Committee will meet to consider endorsements on Feb. 21 in Hershey.

Students rushed to hospital after taking unknown meds

Three Reading students were rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon after taking medication at school given to them by a classmate.

"That is a shame that kids can get those things and do that stuff," said Tom Meneely, a parent in Reading.

School officials tell us a student brought the pills to Gateway School, in the 1700 block of City Line Avenue, then passed them out to two 9th graders and a 12th grade student.

"It goes on every day. But it is a big problem with society nowadays. The kids are coming up faster than the parents are," said Keenan Bryant in Reading.

Gateway School is a school for high school aged students with special needs. BCIU runs the program.

The Reading School District has launched an investigation into the incident, but has not yet determined what the medication was.

Some parents are finding this news hard to swallow.

"Should be paid more attention to I guess. They should be monitored more so that kind of stuff does not happen," said Meneely.

Others feel responsibility lies with the parents.

"It all starts at home. Where do they get them from? That is the big question. Parents have to have more guidance and pay more attention to their kids," said Bryant.

School officials tells us two of the three students were still in the hospital Friday night, but were expected to be released soon.

The school district notified parents of children at Gateway School of the incident.

Revenge was motive behind deadly Allentown stabbing

Prosecutors say there may be a motive behind a deadly stabbing that happened inside an Allentown barber shop last week.

New details emerged Friday during a preliminary hearing for the suspect, 43-year-old Eugenio Hernandez-Andino.

Police say Hernandez-Andino stabbed 30- year old Jose Reyes-Espinosa multiple times after a heated argument inside the Washington barbershop last Thursday on West Hamilton street in Allentown.

During his police interview, investigators say Hernandez-Andino admitted to the stabbing and claims he did it because Reyes-Espinosa and a group of men assaulted him in 2009 and he 'wanted to teach him a lesson'.

According to Hernandez-Andino he originally went to the barber shop to meet up with Juan Garcia who works there to get a 'key'.

However when he took the stand on Friday, Garcia, who's currently incarcerated for a parole violation, said he'd never seen Hernandez-Andino before.

Entered as evidence, was cell phone video of the incident captured by Garcia himself.

Prosecutors say the incident was also captured on surveillance video inside the shop.

A police officer who first responded to the scene testified he found Reyes-Espinosa bleeding and lying on a mattress in a back room of the shop with multiple stab wounds to his chest.

Reyes-Espinosa died moments later after being taken to the hospital.

The case is now heading to trial.
