State Police in Schuylkill County are looking for the person who opened fire, killing four pregnant cows at a family farm.
The gruesome discovery was made at Hepler's Homestead Farm on Helfenstein Road in Eldred Township early Monday morning.
The Hepler family awakened to find three cows dead.
Another was seriously injured and had to be put down.
One is expected to be survive.
Jim Hepler, co-owner of the farm, said it appears all five cows were shot close-range.
They each suffered a single, close-range bullet-wound to the head.
"We are really puzzled why this happened," Hepler said. "They were due to have calves sometime between April to June, three to six months pregnant. We didn't really lose four, we lost eight animals if we look at it that way."
The 250-cow dairy farm has been family-run for 235 years.
"We've had thefts before. Nothing this meaningless, this senseless. This is crazy," Hepler said.
The family said the financial loss is upwards of $8,000, though insurance is expected to cover some of the cost.
The person responsible could face charges including animal cruelty, criminal mischief, and agricultural vandalism.
Police believe the incident occurred sometime between 8 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call state police in Schuylkill Haven at 570-739-1330.
