A-Treat soda closing after 97 years, employees say

A-Treat is closing its doors after 97 years of manufacturing and distributing soda to the Lehigh Valley and beyond, according to the company's employees.

Company officials informed them of the closure on Wednesday, employees said.

Some employees lost their jobs immediately, while others are working their last day Friday, according to employees who spoke with 69 News.

Rumors of A-Treat closing have been swirling for weeks. Repeated requests for an interview with a company official have not been answered.

On Friday, a company receptionist said the company had no comment.

According to the company's website, A-Treat was founded in 1918 by Joseph and Jack Egizio in a garage in downtown Allentown.

A-Treat moved to its current location in 1932.

The company makes 32 different flavors of soda, according to its website.

Last year, A-Treat stopped sealing its sodas in Walmart.

At the time, A-Treat Vice President Tom Garvey said Walmart demanded that A-Treat drivers restock shelves in its stores every day.

As a result of that business decision, Garvey said two drivers were laid off.

Man stabbed to death at barbershop in downtown Allentown

An Allentown man died after being stabbed inside a barbershop in downtown Allentown on Thursday, and police said they have a suspect in custody.

The violence unfolded around 3:30 p.m. at the Washington Barbershop, 1129 W. Hamilton St.

The victim, identified as Jose Reyes-Espinosa, 30, of the 200 block of South Madison Street, was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 3:57 p.m.

Allentown police arrested Eugenio Hernandez-Andino, 43, in connection with the fatal stabbing.

Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim has ruled the death a homicide and said Reyes-Espinosa died from multiple stab wounds to his body.

According to court documents, Espinosa was getting his hair cut when Hernandez-Andino entered the barber shop and began to argue with Espinosa, as seen on barber shop surveillance video.

Espinosa tried to leave the barber shop when Hernandez-Andino grabbed him, and during a struggle, police said Hernandez-Andino pulled a knife out of his pants pocket and stabbed Espinosa several times.

Police said a witness confirmed what was seen on the surveillance video and picked Hernandez-Andino out of an eight-person photo line up.

Police believe this is an isolated incident that is not connected to the business.

Hernandez-Andino faces one count of criminal homicide.

He was taken to the Lehigh County Prison. No bail was allowed.

His preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 30.

Health Beat: Antidepressants to treat Alzheimer's?

Claire Anderson is an avid photographer. She focuses on nature and portraits.

"There is that beauty of the face," Anderson said. "It is lovely to capture."

With three kids and nine grandchildren, Anderson has plenty of potential subjects, faces she hopes time doesn't erase.

"My parents both had the diagnosis of Alzheimer's," said Anderson.

Now, Anderson is also showing early signs of the disease.

"I wanted to see that something could be found that could alter that," Anderson explained.

Researchers looking at the protein buildup in the Alzheimer's brain have discovered a commonly prescribed drug may make an impact.

"We know that people with a history of antidepressant use have less plaque in the brain than people who don’t have a history of antidepressant use," explained John Cirrito, assistant professor of neurology specializing in Alzheimer's disease at Washington University, St. Louis.

In the recent study, researchers gave a single dose of the antidepressant Citalopram to 23 adults under age 50. Samples of spinal fluids over the next 24 hours showed a 37 percent drop in the protein that forms brain plaques.

"This is promising," said Cirrito, "but it's early."

Anderson knows that a cure for Alzheimer's may not come quickly, but it's crucial to her nonetheless.

"I can be optimistic that my grandchildren will benefit from these studies," Anderson said.

Cirrito said while most patients tolerate antidepressants well, the risks outweigh the benefits of using the drugs until a strong connection is established. He said that will take additional research.

Researchers plan to study older adults and treat them for two weeks with the antidepressants to see if there is continued reduction in the proteins that cause brain plaque.

Pennsylvania Lottery introducing new 'PICK' twice-daily drawings

The Pennsylvania Lottery is launching a new lineup of daily drawings that includes new names for some longstanding games.

Four games will be grouped together as "PICK" games, in which players can bet on two to five numbers in drawings held twice a day, lottery officials said Friday.

PICK 2 is a new game that allows players to choose any two-digit number.

PICK 3, which has been known as The Daily Number for 38 years, will allow players to choose any three-digit number. PICK 4 will be the new name of BIG 4 and PICK 5 will replace Quinto.

"The PICK games are 'Easy to Say, Simple to Play,'" said Sil Lutkewitte, the lottery's executive director. "They will help to reinvigorate our draw games portfolio through a fresh, new look, a coordinated marketing strategy and new second-chance opportunities."

The changes will take effect on Jan. 27.

The first new second-chance opportunity will take place from Feb. 2 to Feb. 26, when the Take Your Pick! Second-Chance Drawings will allow players of any PICK game to enter one of two drawings to win either a $50,000 top prize or one of 100 cash prizes of $1,000.

Ferrets attack 1-month-old infant left in car seat

A Delaware County infant is in stable condition after officials said she was attacked by family ferrets.

According to our partner station, WPVI, three ferrets ate part of the one-month-old's face Thursday at a home the 300 block of Poplar Street in the borough of Darby.

WPVI says sources tell them the baby was placed in a car seat then left on the floor.

The baby's mother then reportedly went upstairs. While she was away, the ferrets escaped their cloth-like cage and attacked the girl, chewing on the baby's face.

WPVI says the parents' four other children are now in the custody of Child & Youth Services.

The ferrets reportedly chewed on the infant's lips, nose and other parts of her face.

The baby is being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and officials say it's likely she'll need multiple surgeries over the years to repair her face.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.
