A Delaware County infant is in stable condition after officials said she was attacked by family ferrets.

According to our partner station, WPVI, three ferrets ate part of the one-month-old's face Thursday at a home the 300 block of Poplar Street in the borough of Darby.

WPVI says sources tell them the baby was placed in a car seat then left on the floor.

The baby's mother then reportedly went upstairs. While she was away, the ferrets escaped their cloth-like cage and attacked the girl, chewing on the baby's face.

WPVI says the parents' four other children are now in the custody of Child & Youth Services.

The ferrets reportedly chewed on the infant's lips, nose and other parts of her face.

The baby is being treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and officials say it's likely she'll need multiple surgeries over the years to repair her face.

No criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.
