Body of worker trapped in silo collapse found

Authorities say the body of a worker trapped in last week's collapse of a 125-foot silo at a Bucks County shipping port has been found.

Bristol Township Acting Police Chief Ralph Johnson said Sunday that firefighters located the body of Anthony Gabriele and ``He is deceased.''

Johnson said Gabriele's body was being disentangled from the wreckage and would be transferred to the county coroner.

Authorities in Bucks County said the silo containing concrete mix at Riverside Industrial Complex collapsed late Wednesday, trapping the victim under tons of steel and stony granules.

Officials searched the debris for hours and then termed the operation a recovery rather than a rescue mission, citing the lack of air pockets and the 10-degree temperatures.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the collapse.

Life Lessons: Volunteering from the heart

In the new year, many people think about giving back to society in some way but with so many needy organizations out there, it can be difficult to know where to start.

What sparks people to open their hearts and give their time to others?

Sometimes it has to do with their own struggles and their hopes for other people.

Right above Michelle Zenie's desk is a picture of her 16-year-old son Cole.

He is a cancer survivor, diagnosed when he was just three years old.

The experience spurred Michelle to volunteer for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley, which is based in Bethlehem.

"It sort of took me by surprise how meaningful it was for me to see the kids again who were in treatment and to connect with the parents who were going through that experience that I had gone through, " explains Michelle.

She is now executive director of the the foundation and works with kids like 7-year-old Xavier Garcia and their families.

Xavier's mom, Mariana Negron says her son became very sick in April of 2013.

" I took him to LVH and within an hour they gave me the diagnosis that he had leukemia," says Mariana.

So, Michelle and her team stepped in. They create fun activities for kids to do and families to get a break. They even bring levity into treatment centers with activities like the so called Chemo Circus.

"We really want to make sure there are times when there's also some fun and some laughter and some smiles," says Michelle.

Mariana is very appreciative of the help she has received from the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of the Lehigh Valley.

She says arrangements were even made to help her buy Christmas gifts.

"They also give emotional support. I can't even count the amount of times they've been there for me, not only for Xavier but also for my other children and for myself," says Mariana.

Michelle and her team of volunteers work to help kids forget about the pain of cancer with parties and activities.

"The kids do great. They want to be there. They want to have fun and it's important for their parents to see them having fun and not always having to do the hard stuff," says MIchelle.

As for Xavier, he's doing much better but his mom still has worries.

"Right now he's in remission, thankfully, I'm very happy to say. It's a long road and it's not just the treatment now, it's the possible after effects." says his mom.

Right now Michelle is working on a major fundraiser called Run to Live and looking for more volunteers.

This year’s Run to Live will take place on March 28th at the Ironton Rail Trail in Coplay.

Palmer Twp. man reacts to charges against driver who barreled into his home

Charges have been filed for the driver of the car that went airborne, plowing into a home in Palmer Township in December.

According to a release from the Palmer Township Police the driver, Kenneth Morales, had a blood alcohol content that was nearly three times the legal limit. Morales' car hit homeowner Tom Dittmar's guardrail, multiple trees, the side of his home and his sons' two cars parked at his home, just behind Dittmar's house.

"It moved the corner of the house by about a foot and a half," Dittmar said. "There's a lot of damage."

According to police, at the time, Morales was driving with his 15-year-old step daughter. The pair were rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Morales has been charged with driving under the influence, endangering the welfare of children and criminal mischief, among others.

Over the past 40 years, Dittmar says he has seen 15 similar accidents on his property. He says he believes the accidents have resulted mainly from drivers moving through stop sign across the street from his home too fast.

"Tired of it," Dittmar said. "Tired of people taking what I've worked for all of my life, and I'm tired of fighting."

Dittmar says the damage to his home and his son's home is about $50,000.

Morales was arraigned and released after posting 10 percent of the ordered $7,500 dollars bail. His preliminary hearing date is still pending.

Pain relief at the pump: Gas drops below $2 per gallon in NJ

There is finally some relief for drivers. Analyst say gas prices have fallen for a record 102 days in a row.

Gas prices are below $2.00 per gallon in Phillipsburg and others stations throughout New Jersey.

"It's just stunning," said motorist James Benjamin.

"I just filled up for under $30," said Benjamin. "It's been a while since that's happened , it's a very long time."

In fact, AAA says we haven't seen prices like this since May of 2009. Analysts cite a drop in crude oil prices.

The national average for regular unleaded gas is $2.17 a gallon. That's $1.12 cents cheaper than the same date last year.

AAA says Americans can save up to $75 billion in 2015 on gas, as long as prices remain low through the year. That savings is expected to pump up the local economy.

However, officials say these prices might not stay this low for too long.

"Don't get a gas guzzler because gas is going to go up but while it's low, enjoy it," said President Obama.

AAA predicts gas might not stay this low throughout 2015. But analysts say the average price at the pump will likely remain below $3.00 this year.

Abused pet pig, left for dead, gets new lease on life in Quakertown

A severely abused pot-bellied pig, left for dead, has found a new loving home in Quakertown.

Her name is Cheesedoodle and her playful personality, mixed with being fully house trained, has helped the pig win over the hearts of the entire staff at Last Chance Ranch in Quakertown.

"We have her big quilt and she is all set up like a princess," Last Chance Ranch Kennel Manager, AnnMarie Petitto-Thomas said.

Petitto-Thomas says someone in Philadelphia called Animal Control after finding Cheesedoodle with a severe neck injury. Petitto-Thomas decided to take the pig in. After treating the injury, she says she thinks someone tried to make Cheesedoodle Christmas dinner.

"I mean this looks bad right now but I mean it was horrendous," Petitto-Thomas said.

Initially it was thought that the humane thing to do was to euthanize the pig, but Cheesedoodle's miraculous recovery and charming demeanor caused ranch hands to change their mind.

"It is amazing to me how forgiving she is, and how trusting she is," Petitto-Thomas said. "She never doubted that we weren't going to do anything but the best for her."

Cheesedoodle, now lives happily among the other animals at the ranch.

"She came pretty close to crossing that rainbow bridge, but she's going to be fine," Petitto-Thomas said. "Our volunteers just fawn over her, she is the kennel favorite now."

Pettito-Thomas says after getting Cheesedoodle back on her feet at the ranch, she will work to find another loving permanent home for the pot-bellied pig who received a second chance at life.

Phantoms win 4th straight; Zepp recalled by Flyers

The Phantoms have become road warriors over the last two weeks. Lehigh Valley suited up at St. John's Sunday afternoon looking to finish its road trip at 4-1.

They did just that. Emphatically.

Lehigh Valley rolled past the IceCaps, 6-2, behind six different goal scorers. Anthony Stolarz got the start in the net and made 21 saves.

The reason why Stolarz received the nod was because Rob Zepp was recalled by the Flyers earlier in the day.

The move comes in the wake of the injury to Steve Mason, which could keep the normal starter out 1-2 weeks.

Zepp won in his first appearance with the Flyers back in December to become the oldest goalie to win his NHL debut since 1926.
