Two local health networks could be joining forces.
Penn State University said it is considering acquiring the Saint Joseph Regional Health Network and merging it with the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
"For the past nearly five years, Penn State Hershey Medical Center has had an existing relationship with St. Joseph Regional Health Network in areas related to oncology, neurosciences and pediatric services, thus improving access to care for patient’s cancer, stroke, high-risk pregnancy, and neurological disorders, as well as offering a vast range of pediatric sub-specialists," Mike Jupina, a spokesman for St. Joe's, said in a statement Monday.
"To be able to join forces would result in a significant expansion and enhancement of services to patients in Berks County and beyond with a focus to make health care better, safer, more accessible and more affordable," Jupina said.
The Penn State Board of Trustees is scheduled to discuss the plan at a meeting Friday.
If it does decide to move forward with the plan, a vote would be held Jan. 16.
There is no word yet on how the merger could affect patients or employees.
