An improperly installed pellet stove caused a fire Saturday that destroyed a home in Lehigh County, officials said.

According to the Salisbury Township police department, a pellet stove with improper clearance and installation started the fire at a home on Wistar Street around 5 a.m.

The stove was not newly installed, but with the colder weather, it was working harder, police said.

The Garriga family lost everything in the fire, and apparently the home had been recently renovated.

A smoke alarm woke up the family, who got out safely.
