The smell of popcorn filled the room as dozens of people stepped inside the The Historic State Theatre of Boyertown.
Community members came to see the holiday classic 'It's a Wonderful Life'.
"We wanted to come out here and support them and take a look at the wonderful life on the big screen," said Mark Corkran, a moviegoer.
"This is my first time attending a movie with my dad in my entire 35 years," said Erin Siegle, a moviegoer. "I knew this was a movie he liked because I remember watching it with him as a child."
But it is one of the last shows the theater will ever feature because soon this 102 year old building will be renovated, the old 35mm reels will be removed and the big screen will be replaced with big acts of live entertainment.
Theater owner Kevin Rhude tells us the entire film industry has switched to digital and has slowly discontinued the movie reels still used in Boyertown.
To convert the theater to digital would cost about $100,000. So instead, he decided to convert it back to its 1912 roots of live entertainment.
The theater holds about 200 people and the owner is hoping that it provides a nice small intimate experience for live shows.
"When we are doing some of the live concerts, you are actually sitting just 20 feet away from a musician who is telling you the story of how they came up with this song. That is what makes it so personable," said Kevin Rhude, the theatre owner.
Many of the people we spoke with say they will miss the movies, but look forward to the live shows.
"I am glad because I attend live theater in Reading and I love live theater. So now I will have another place to see live theater and you do not have to go to Philly," said Barbara Lachowski, a moviegoer.
"We have a line out the door tonight. It is rewarding. It is great seeing the town support it and we pray for the same support as we transition into live entertainment," said Rhude.
The last showing is Saturday night at 7 p.m.
