"Thank a cop today" is the message being spread on billboards across Berks County, an effort earning praise from some, and opposition from others.
"I think it's good that somebody took the initiative, I thought it was maybe the police themselves," said Jay Gosch, of Muhlenberg Township.
But rather than police, the person behind the undertaking is Jim Landrigan, owner of the Berks County billboard company "Land Displays."
The billboards, which can be seen in the dozens across both Berks and Schuylkill Counties, feature messages like "No one appreciates a cop until you need one."
Landrigan told 69 News that the message is his way of taking a stand against the recent police backlash nationwide.
"The police have a bad rep and they don't deserve it, they don't deserve it at all," said supporter Keith Strom, of Reading. "They protect people like us, we need police to protect us."
Others, though, disagree.
"I know everybody's entitled to their opinions… but you know, I don't think because of everything going on, they should put billboards up saying 'thank a cop today,'" said one man, who didn't want to provide his full name.
"Everybody's gonna choose sides," he added. "And that's just how it's gonna be."
