2 arrested, 1 sought in murder of man in Reading

Two people are under arrest and a third is being sought on murder charges in the deadly shooting of a man in Reading last year.

Hector Mattei-Santiago, 18, and Ayannia Martin, 18, were apprehended early Wednesday morning; Raymond Martinez III, 22, remains at large.

All three suspects stand accused in the shooting death of John Villarreal, 29, inside a first floor apartment at 817 Green St. in Reading on Nov. 7, 2014.

Police described the crime as being a drug-related "robbery gone bad."

"Anytime you have very young adults that begin to make very poor decisions, life-changing decisions, that are going to impact them, their family and their community is troubling," said Capt. Damond Kloc, Reading Police Department.

Martinez is also being sought for parole violations and on charges he escaped from the Wernersville Correctional Facility on Jan. 2.

Martinez and another inmate, who has since been captured, got away by pulling a fire alarm and getting into a minivan, according to state police.

Martinez was doing time at the facility in South Heidelberg Township for burglary.

"We are doing the best we can. We still have to police our community. It would be very helpful if someone knows where his whereabouts are to assist us," said Kloc.

Anyone who knows of Martinez's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Alert Berks County at 877-373-9913. A cash reward is being offered for information that leads to his arrest.

AG: Family scammed $20 million, bought Ferraris, Rolls Royces

Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane has announced charges against a Bucks County family and two others, stemming from what Kane calls a "massive" insurance fraud scheme.

The charges come on the heels of a grand jury report.

Officials said the investigation began in October 2013 after a fire at a home in New Hope, Bucks County. The home was owned by Claire Risoldi, who referred to the residence as "Clairemont."

Risoldi lived in the home with her husband, Thomas French, her son, Carl and her daughter-in-law, Sheila.

Officials said it was the third fire to happen at Clairemont in the past five years. Following each of the fires, officials said the Risoldis filed claims with their insurance carrier, which paid out $20 million.

The report also said the Risoldis are seeking $20 million more in insurance claims, including $10 million for jewelry that the grand jury found Claire Risoldi falsely accused the firefighters who fought the flames of stealing.

State officials seized $7 million in assets from the suspects, including $3 million in bank accounts, $1.2 million in jewelry, six Ferraris, two Rolls Royces, one Cobra and four other vehicles worth $2.8.

Health Beat: Joint replacement for the spine

Eileen Eckert is a mother, a grandmother, and now great-grandmother.

"I love it. I'm on the go!" exclaimed Eckert.

But keeping up with the little ones was tough when Eckert developed spinal stenosis, a condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal and lots of pain.

"It was a stabbing pain," Eckert said. "It just got more and more painful."

Eckert's doctor told her about a brand new procedure, and she was one of the first patients in the country to have it.

"I said if it's going to take the pain away, let's do it," Eckert said.

As part of a clinical trial, Dr. Neel Anand is performing a joint replacement for the spine. He first removes parts of the facet joints.

"In the back, there are two joints, called facet joints that actually move," said Anand, clinical professor of surgery and director of spine trauma at Cedars-Sinai.

Anand then implants artificial facet joints that move and function just like healthy joints. With traditional spinal fusion, patients have limited mobility and risk further spine degeneration. With the new joint replacement, the goal is for patients to be able to move freely and not compromise their spine.

Eckert noticed immediate relief.

"She's certainly somebody who has benefited from this," explained Anand.

Now, she can lift her great-grandson without pain holding her back.

Nearly 30 centers across the country are participating in a clinical trial to test the facet joint replacement surgery. To date, more than 300 patients have been enrolled and treated in the clinical trial.

AG: Drug forgery ring operated in Berks, 43 other Pennsylvania counties

The Pennsylvania attorney general's office said it's busted a drug forgery ring that operated in 44 Pennsylvania counties, including Berks.

Charges have been filed against 22 people. Authorities said they ran a sophisticated prescription drug ring that put more than 59,000 oxycodone pills on the streets using forged prescriptions and stolen information from physicians for a profit of $1.7 million.

Dozens of law enforcement agencies and 17 district attorneys worked with the attorney general's office on the nearly two-year investigation.

"Together, we have dismantled a prescription drug ring that was a major source of supply in Philadelphia," said Attorney General Kathleen Kane. "The diversion of prescription narcotics in the commonwealth feeds addiction to even deadlier street drugs, like heroin, and every one of our partners joined the fight to save lives."

Authorities said one of the people charged, Dalia Torres, 44, filled a prescription in Berks County. They said ring members also had prescriptions filled in Lancaster County.

Police: woman stole necklace from memorial, tried to sell online

A Carbon County woman is facing charges after police say she stole a necklace from a memorial that was set up at the scene of a deadly crash, then tried to sell it online.

Pennsylvania State Police say Amanda Everitt, 24, of Palmerton, is charged with theft.

Investigators say she removed a silver and ruby necklace from a memorial that was set up on Dairy Road, in Lower Towamensing Township.

That's where four teenagers were killed in a crash on December 19th. Michael Muniz, 17; Nathan Murray, 16; Courtney Murray, 13; all of Palmerton, and Austin Hunsicker, 16, of Bowmanstown died.

Police say Everitt tried to sell the necklace on Craigslist and on Facebook. They say one of the victim's relatives saw the photos, and arranged a meeting with Everitt to buy the necklace.
