Mother of a hit and run victim speaks out

The mother of a young hit-and-run victim speaks exclusively to 69 News.

The accident happened at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning in the 900 block of Main Street in Northampton County.

Crystal Laeyt's 10-year-old daughter was hit on her way to school by a vehicle that did not stop after the accident.

Laeyt says she is incredibly thankful that her daughter was able to joke just hours after she was injured.

"We were told she was hit with enough force that her shoes were flown off of her," Laeyt said. "When they were holding her for observation, she looks over to me and she's like, 'well at least it wasn't a bus.'"

Amanda Miller, 21, of Bath, called police and turned herself at approximately 5 p.m. Monday night.

"We received a call from the 911 center that a female had called in and said she was the one who hit the little girl and that she was waiting outside her house in Bath," said Chief Ronald Morey, Northampton Police Department. "The picture of her car being on the news is what did it."

Laeyt's daughter was back at school on Tuesday and is expected to make a full recovery.

"Reading the comments especially on 69 News, I wanted to let them know that I see their support and it is greatly appreciated," Laeyt said.

Miller is now facing three charges that include three misdemeanor charges that include failing to report the accident.

Police say Miller could face jail time.

Jury deliberating in former sportscaster's fraud case

A jury will resume its deliberations Wednesday in the fraud trial of former Philadelphia sportscaster Don Tollefson.

After deliberating for hours on Tuesday a judge sent the jury home approximately at 9:30 p.m.

"The trial was about two and a half weeks long. They are a hard working jury and I have no quarrel with them taking as long as it takes to get it right and I'm very confident that they will do that," said Bucks County Assistant District Attorney.

Tollefson, who is representing himself, said, "With the advice of counsel I really have nothing to say I just want to get some rest, come back tomorrow morning 9 a.m."

Tollefson is a former Philadelphia sportscaster accused of bilking hundreds of thousands of dollars from people who thought they were buying sporting event trips set up by Tollefson's Winning Ways charity.

Prosecutors said Tollefson tricked roughly 200 people out of $340,000 worth of bogus sports and travel packages.

Tollefson claimed he was a bad businessman, with a charitable heart, who was also battling drug and alcohol addiction.

He said he was a bad bookkeeper and didn't realize there was a problem until he ran out of money in 2012.

The jury asked to see transcripts of some of the testimony.

The judge told them they would have to rely on their memory.

Phillipsburg honors community police work

Phillipsburg council on Tuesday honored three of the town's police officers for their work in community policing.

It began as a conversation at a police union meeting, and ended with a project, with the officers -- Matt Amey, Michael Connaughton and Ryan Sokolowksi -- collecting food for the food bank run by NORWESCAP.

Chief James Falbourn told council the three officers had been encouraged to walk the community as part of their duties.

People along their route gave donations, and the officers collected 800 pounds of food in the course of two days.

In other business, Falbourn reported that Officer Lou DeLuca, the department's new school resource officer, had begun his assignment Tuesday.

The position, created last year with the help of a $125,000 grant, is based out of Phillipsburg Middle School.

DeLuca is responsible for school security and crime prevention, but will also deal with bullying if it rises to the level of a criminal offense.

Falbourn said DeLuca will work with other school's in the community, as well as in Alpha.
