Phillipsburg council on Tuesday honored three of the town's police officers for their work in community policing.
It began as a conversation at a police union meeting, and ended with a project, with the officers -- Matt Amey, Michael Connaughton and Ryan Sokolowksi -- collecting food for the food bank run by NORWESCAP.
Chief James Falbourn told council the three officers had been encouraged to walk the community as part of their duties.
People along their route gave donations, and the officers collected 800 pounds of food in the course of two days.
In other business, Falbourn reported that Officer Lou DeLuca, the department's new school resource officer, had begun his assignment Tuesday.
The position, created last year with the help of a $125,000 grant, is based out of Phillipsburg Middle School.
DeLuca is responsible for school security and crime prevention, but will also deal with bullying if it rises to the level of a criminal offense.
Falbourn said DeLuca will work with other school's in the community, as well as in Alpha.
