A Thanksgiving tradition is taking shape in Easton, one piece of wood at a time.
Students are getting pumped up for their annual gridiron matchup with Phillipsburg, but before football comes fire.
Students started working on this massive wood pile early Tuesday morning. More than 400 students took part in a tradition some have been waiting for all their lives.
“Today, we’re continuing the tradition of building the greatest bonfire that Easton has ever seen,” said senior Giovanny Zapata.
It's a tradition that has been going on for years. Graduates from the 1960s have gone from fire starters to the guys providing the fuel.
"Get down there. Get the pallets on, and let’s beat them," said 1965 graduate Barry Grube.
“We had people as early as 7 a.m. this morning," said Daniel Gonzalez, 12th grade principal at Easton Area High School. "But even yesterday, we had trailers dropping off and getting the wood pile ready for our students. We’ve got roughly about 450 to 500 students that are working out here.”
The 108th meeting of Easton and Phillipsburg will take place on Thanksgiving.
While players know what the coaches want them to do, there's only one goal here, which is to build the highest pile in school history.
“It is organized chaos," added senior Shaylynn Jones. "We’re just trying to make the bonfire as big as we can get it, bigger than the rest of the classes over the last couple of years.”
“This is essentially that event that brings the whole class together," said Gonzalez. "A lot of these kids have been together since grade school. Some of them have been products of parents that have been here in Easton, generations and generations.”
With the stack of wood, you may see the fire in New Jersey. If you do, know that is only part of the plan.
“We’re excited to see how it’s burning tomorrow, and then Thursday, we’re going to defeat P-burg on the football field,” added Zapata.
Students will sleep over to protect their creation. So far, their only worry is snow in the forecast.
