Hundreds of needy families in Reading lined up to receive a free Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings.

The Salvation Army does a food distribution every Tuesday before Thanksgiving. This year, each family got five bags of food, as well as a 10- to 12-pound turkey donated by Reading Health System.

"We have a community that continues to provide for itself. People step up and they just care. This year we have seen that in the number of volunteers, in the number of food that has come in and it has been wonderful," said Mindy McCormick, the director of social services for the Salvation Army.

One of the people who lined up was Brandon Pugh, who lost his job several months ago and said events like this are a blessing around the holidays.

"I love it. People helping each other out. It is awesome," Pugh said.

Others like Bill Rittenhouse get assistance from the Salvation Army year-round to help offset the cost of medical bills.

"I think it helps the community out, feeding the people and the ones that are starving, and I enjoy coming here," Rittenhouse said.

Along with the 752 turkeys Reading Health System donated, associates with Penske boxed food and other supplies. It is all for more than 100 families through the Salvation Army's Adopt a Family program.

This is the ninth year Penske associates have been collecting and boxing the donations, and employees said it is always a great success.

"There are boxes everywhere, people are all running around trying to make sure there is something for each family. It is just a great feeling to be able to help the community," said Rosemary Schaffer, a national support executive for Penske.
