First snow of the season arrives in Berks County

Old man winter came in with a vengeance Thursday afternoon as steady snow flurries fell throughout the region.

Our first taste of winter arrived.

Steady snow blanketed Berks County for most of Thursday evening.

"It is wonderful. I could not wait for winter to get here. Here it is. Now I cannot wait for spring," said Cheryl Martinez, a driver.

This was the scene in Ruscombmanor Township where temperatures took a significant nose dive, dropping roughly 10 degrees in a matter of two hours.

It did not take long for the rain to usher in the snow, catching some drivers, like Art Smith, by surprise.

"I was not expecting snow today. Colder weather, but not snow," said Smith, a driver.

"Just in the last couple of hours I noticed it was getting quite cold. I knew we were probably going to have rain earlier, but I did not think it would turn into snow," said Carl Brewington, a driver.

Travelers were also stunned to see such steady snowfall after experiencing the warmer autumn-like weather over the past couple of days.

"Yesterday was great. I was outside in the yard raking leaves and today it is snowing all over us," said Martinez.

Although the storm brought more snow than anticipated, many people welcomed the first snowfall of the season, even if it may have slowed their evening commute.

"I hope drivers will be alright. It looks a little treacherous out there. So hopefully everybody coming home during rush hour is quite careful," said Brewington.

Remember to slow down and use extra caution when it is snowing.
