The county real estate tax for property owners in Berks is set to remain the same in 2015.
The commissioners were presented with the new year's proposed budget Thursday morning.
The budget calls for the real estate tax rate to remain at 7.372 mills. That means someone with property assessed at $100,000 will pay a real estate tax bill of $737.20.
The commissioners also held the line on taxes in the 2014 budget, however, officials said they do project the need for a tax increase of 1.84 percent in 2016.
Highlights of the 2015 budget proposal include $455.3 million in expenditures and a deficit of $3.2 million. The average wage rate increases for employees range from 2 to 2.5 percent.
The county was able to lower its debt service by $1 million by refinancing bonds. Some savings are also generated by the merger of Berks and Lancaster counties' mass transit agencies into the South Central Transit Authority (SCTA), which the commissioners approved Thursday.
While the budget eliminates 10.5 net positions, two positions in the county's Children and Youth Services department have to be created to handle an increased workload that resulted from publicity surrounding the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse case, officials said.
A final vote on the budget is scheduled for Dec. 18. In the meantime, it's available for public review on Berks County's website.
