If a train derailed in your neighborhood, would you and your family be safe?
One local lawmaker says he isn't so sure.
In an interview with 69 News, Senator Bob Casey said he is pushing for stricter safety measures to put train safety back on track.
"This is becoming a huge problem," said Casey (D-PA).
Senator Casey said the Department of Transportation has drawn up a proposal calling for increased safety measures on train cars carrying hazardous materials along with additional resources for first responders.
However, it has hit a standstill at the Office of Management and Budget.
"We are just telling them to try and move as quick as they can, create a sense of urgency," said Casey. "To get that rule in place so we can enhance safety."
Some of the rules within the proposal deal with train speed and building specifications to make new train cars safer.
The Budget office has promised to review this material by May, however, Casey said it needs to be done much sooner than that.
