Cold, dry air brings dry skin which can cause breakouts, or other irritations of the skin.
You may end up grabbing a product that looks like a “quick fix” and end up doing more damage than before.
During winter months, you should only wash your face at night with a gentle cleanser and splash cold water on in the morning. The cold water splash will reduce any puffiness when you wake up.
Put a humidifier in your room at night. It will add necessary moisture in the dry air and in your skin.
Be ingredient savvy. For lips, avoid balms that contain camphor and lanolin. The best lip balms have few ingredients, such as pure petroleum jelly.
For skin, products with shea butter, lactic acid, or mineral oil are excellent skin hydrators. Apply them to damp skin to trap water molecules onto the skin.
Eric Schweiger, a dermatologist in New York City says that dehydrated skin turns over more slowly, creating a buildup of dead skin which can clog pores and lean to acne flair up.
Also avoid licking your lips because when your saliva evaporates, it can carry away some of the protective lipid layer on the surface.
