The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission ordered JSM Business Services, of Allentown, to pay more than $5,636 to former employee Heather Katelyn Romig, of Orefield, for discriminating against her because of her pregnancy. The order took effect Feb. 24.

A discrimination complaint was filed alleging that JSM Business Services, owner of the Auntie Anne’s Pretzels in the Trexlertown Walmart, fired her because she was pregnant. The commission held a public hearing after an investigation found sufficient information to support her allegations and the parties were not willing to settle.

“Pennsylvania women have a legal right to be free from discrimination when they become pregnant,” Executive Director JoAnn Edwards said. “Pregnancy discrimination is based on outdated stereotypes and it hurts Pennsylvania families and our economy.”

The commission ordered the company to cease discriminating against employees based on pregnancy, and to pay Romig $98 for expenses and $4,502, plus interest, for lost pay. To date, the interest brings the award to more than $5,636.

The company has 30 days to report to the commission on how it will comply with the order.
