From basement to brewery.

A Lehigh County man with a passion for home brewing beer has landed in the local spotlight.

"I've been home brewing off and on for about 20 years," said Jim Yergey of Center Valley.

He's retired from a career in chemistry and has more time to devote to the hoppy hobby.

"When I start the home brewing process the first thing I have to do is grind some grains," he explained as he showed the process he goes through in his basement.

One beer he brewed is now getting him recognition beyond the walls of his home.

"The name of it is Hoptileitious," said Yergey.

His imperial IPA was named the winner of Lehigh Valley Beer Week's "Be Our Brewer For A Day" contest in August.

"The community picked this beer as their favorite beer and so that's what makes it Lehigh Valley Beer Week's' official beer," said Jesse Albertson, president of Lehigh Valley Beer Week.

Wednesday Yergey worked with the brew master at Fegley's Allentown Brew Works to brew his creation on a larger scale.

"It was really an exciting day to win the contest back in August and even more exicting to be able to come here today and brew the beer," Yergey told 69 News.

His beer will be available at a variety of bars and restaurants during Lehigh Valley Beer Week February 15-22. The beer will be renamed LVBW3 for Lehigh Valley Beer Week 3.

"It's the third time we've done this so he's the third home brewer that's got to come in and brew his beer, his recipe, with our brewery team," said Albertson.

Yergey is looking forward to that week and whatever else the future may hold.

He said, "I hope to open up a nanobrewery sometime in the next year or so."
