Foodies everywhere are flocking to the 99th Pennsylvania Farm Show, enjoying home-grown produce and traditional recipes.
"I recommend you have the mushroom soup, it was really delicious!" said Mary Lomnyczuk, of Wyomissing, Berks County.
She and her husband, John, made their first food stop at the Mushroom Farmers of Pennsylvania booth, enjoying mushrooms brought in from Berks and Chester counties.
Among the many mushroom varieties served up are the classic breaded whole white mushrooms, jalapeño poppers and button mushroom salad.
Pam Dwyer, of Hereford Township, Berks County, picked up two packages of fresh mushrooms.
"We love mushrooms… [they are a] superfood!" she said.
According to Gale Ferranto, booth manager, roughly 1,400 pounds of mushrooms are sold each day.
"Every year we have a lot of work to do, but it ends up being a great show and everybody's so happy. They say they wait for these all year long!" she said.
After lunch at the mushroom stand, the Lomnyczuks headed over to the state Beekeepers Association for dessert. The booth offers its unique honey waffles with honey ice cream.
"You can't beat it!" John said.
"It was just Heaven. Just Heaven," Mary added.
Booth volunteer Aaron Fisher said at least 500 waffles are dished out each day. It's a process he's familiar with, having been part of the show for more than 30 years.
"My grandfather ran this booth," he said. "The mushroom people, I've known them pretty much all my life. That's one of the biggest things here. We come together as friends."
Ferranto, too, has been part of the show for generations.
"My parents started managing this booth 37 years ago, and now my brother and I do it, so it's tradition," she said. "You look forward to seeing everyone. It's kind of like coming home."
The farm show runs through Jan. 17.
