Poll: Cold reception for NJ gas tax proposal

Some New Jersey lawmakers are saying raising gas taxes is the only way to pay for new road, bridge, and rail projects. But the increase is proving to be a tough sell for residents.

"I think the prices of gas were ridiculous for a long time and now it is starting to go down, why would they raise it back up?" New Jersey resident Josh Vanness said. "It just doesn't make sense."

According to a Quinnipiac University poll, 58 percent of New Jersey residents oppose raising the gasoline tax while 39 percent support the idea.

The problem facing lawmakers: revenues for a $1.26 billion fund will be put toward paying off debt and new transportation projects would be started through more debt.

One gas tax proposal on the table would raise money by making petroleum products an average of $300 more expensive a year for drivers.

While there is currently not a consensus on how to move forward, lawmakers say a decision could be made in February when Gov. Chris Christie delivers his budget address.
