Police to drunk drivers this holiday season: You better watch out

Police in Berks County are sending a message to holiday party-goers: Drive sober or get pulled over.

That's the theme of an ongoing drunk driving enforcement campaign that is being stepped up across the country during the holiday season.

Police said they will be out in force through Jan. 1, actively searching for drunk drivers on the roads in Berks County.

"It's time for all drivers to get the message," said Ofc. David Bentz, Exeter Township Police Department, "that drunk driving isn't a victimless crime. You could kill yourself or someone else, or get a DUI and go to jail."

In December 2012, police said 830 people nationwide were killed in crashes involving at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol level of .08 (the legal limit in Pennsylvania and New Jersey) or higher; 26 of those deaths happened on Christmas Day.

"We can't stand to see this tragic loss of life again and again," Bentz said. "It's heartbreaking to drive up to a house all decorated for the holidays and knock on the door to deliver such terrible news. So, leading up to the holidays, we are really cracking down, and we will show zero tolerance for drunk drivers on the road."

In addition to driving sober, everyone is reminded to be alert for fellow motorists who may be intoxicated and to stop anyone they know from getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

"We've got to work together to make our roads safer this December and year-round," Bentz said.

If you will be drinking, Bentz said to plan ahead and designate a sober driver before the party begins. You can also call a taxi or ride the "Late Night Loop."
