Charges are pending in the crash of a car carrier on Route 222 between Reading and Lancaster, state police said Friday.

The accident happened when the tractor trailer went off the southbound lanes of the highway in Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, and then back onto the highway, causing the truck to jackknife and overturn in the snow-covered median, state police said.

The driver, Angel Nieves, 43, of Dingmans Ferry, Pike County, was trapped in the cab for about an hour before he could be freed and rushed to Reading Hospital, where he was reported Friday to be in fair condition.

Five of the seven vehicles being transported by the car carrier became unsecured and separated as a result of the accident, state police said. Each had to be towed away separately.

The southbound lanes of Route 222 were closed at the Adamstown interchange in Berks County for more than four hours while crews cleared the wreckage.

Investigators did not elaborate on the charges that may be filed.
