Philadelphia police say an officer shot and killed a motorist who struggled with him and another officer during an early morning traffic stop.
Police say the officer shot the motorist once in the head during the confrontation around 3 a.m. Monday on Frankford Avenue in the city's Mayfair section.
The motorist was pronounced dead a short time later.
Officials said they stopped the car for driving without headlights, but asked the driver to get out of the car when they saw a gun in the center console of the man's rented Dodge Charger.
As he exited the car, police said a struggle ensued, and the man forced his way back into the car in an attempt to get the gun when the officer fired and hit the victim in the back of the head.
Police said the gun recovered from the car was a .22 caliber that contained eight rounds of ammunition. It was reported stolen in July, police said.
The officer who fired the fatal shot will be on administrative duty during the investigation.
According to police officials, the 26-year-old victim had four prior arrests--two for attempted murder and related charges. His name was not released.
Police statistics show this is the 26th officer-involved shooting in Philadelphia this year. It is the fourth in which a suspect was killed.
The investigation continues.
