Heroin is on the rise in New Jersey

New Jersey is seeing a major increase in the amount of heroin arrests.

It is a problem police in the area have acknowledged and are looking to tackle.

"I remember growing up in the suburbs and we always thought heroin was a problem that was elsewhere, in the big cities," Director of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, Elie Honig said.

"That is not the case anymore."

Monday night, according to New Jersey State Police, two men were driving on Interstate 80 West in Hope Township, Warren County when the driver was stopped for suspicion of DUI.

Police say they obtained a search warrant for the car and found 16 bricks of heroin and hypodermic needles. Both men were arrested and taken to Warren County Prison.

"Demand for heroin is unfortunately on the rise among New Jersey residents," Honig said.

"Along with that, we have seen a market increase in heroin overdose."

An even larger bust came just days earlier when federal agents and New Jersey State Police seized $1.2 million dollars worth of heroin and arrested two men after another motor vehicle stop on Route 80 in Knowlton Township on Friday.

"There has been a concentration in addressing the pills and those problems from a legislative standpoint," Warren County Prosecutor, Richard Burke said.

"People, I think as a result, turn to heroin because it is easier to get and cheaper."

One way law enforcement is trying to tackle the issue is by keeping lines of communication open between agencies.

Officials say it is an ongoing challenge.
