A family and community are in mourning after a fast-moving fire claimed the life of an elderly couple in Reading.
"I just want to know," said Reina Suarez, the victims' granddaughter. "Did they die fast, slow? What were they feeling?"
Those were the questions that loved ones asked as they gathered to console one another outside the charred home that still had a Christmas decoration on the badly burnt front door.
Suarez just wanted to know why her elderly grandparents, Pedro Morales, 86, and Miriam Vega, 87, had to die in a fast moving fire that ripped through their home Sunday night in the 500 block of Spruce Street.
Relatives say Pedro always had a smile on his face, and his loving wife, Miriam, was known as the dancer in the family.
"Whenever music would turn on, my grandma's eyes would always light up, and she would always start dancing, and my grandfather, no matter what, he was always full of life," said Suarez.
To make matters worse, sources tell 69 News that the couple was bedridden, unable to fend for themselves.
"There's no New Year's Eve, there is no celebration. There's nothing to celebrate," said Suarez.
Officials say the blaze started on the first floor, but it's still unclear what caused the fire.
A vigil is planned for Tuesday evening in front of the home at 6:00 p.m.
