Tim Daley running for mayor of Reading

Tim Daley announced his candidacy Saturday to become the next mayor of Reading.


He will run for the post currently held by Vaughn Spencer, who announced he is seeking re-election.


Daley, who is executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Berks County, said he will focus on building stronger, safer neighborhoods.



"Under my direction, the emphasis will be on clean and safe," he said. "We will change the perception of this city."



Daley has a long history of service in Reading.


Previously he was a Reading police officer and later served as the criminal justice program director for the Berks County courts.


Jim McHale and Wally Scott also have announced they want to be Reading's next mayor.

Elderly N.J. couple safe when car hits their home

Snowy weather may be to blame for a car plowing into a home in Warren County, N.J.



An elderly couple was inside the house, but they are are okay.


It happened Saturday afternoon in the 300 block of Asbury-Bloomsburg Road in Franklin Township.


A 73-year-old who rammed into the house was cited for careless driving.

Phantoms head into break with win over St. John's

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday night with a 4-3 win over the St. John's IceCaps at the PPL Center.


Andrew Gordon, Kevin Goumas, Petr Straka and Taylor Leier netted the goals for the Phantoms, who never trailed in the game.


Lehigh Valley heads into the all-star break at 20-16-4-1 (45 points), out of the playoff picture but within striking distance.


In the ECHL, the Reading Royals opened up the second half of their season with a 2-1 win at South Carolina. The Royals play their first five games of the second half on the road.

Parkland excited to host Hoop Group Showcase

Some of the the top high school boys teams in the area converge at Parkland Sunday for the Lehigh Valley Hoop Group Showcase.


The field features local flavor including the host Trojans and Emmaus.



Perennial powers like Roman Catholic, Neumann-Goretti and Chester will also be featured.



Emmaus plays Neumann-Goretti at 1:40. Parkland will follow that up against District 3 power Susquehanna Township.



Even though its a non-league, Parkland is all business. The Trojans are eager to make a statement.

NCAA RUNDOWN: DeSales splits with Del Val; Moravian sweeps Juniata

DeSales and Delaware Valley split a men's/women's basketball double-header on Saturday. Moravian swept a twin bill from visiting Juniata.


The Bulldogs knocked off the Aggies, 63-55, for Del Val's first loss in Freedom Conference play.


DeSales has won four of its last five games.


In the women's game, the Aggies shocked the Bulldogs at the buzzer in a 67-65 victory. Eireann Anastasi hit the game-winner for Delaware Valley.


Brenna Coll led Del Val with 14 points. DeSales' Megan Baird led everyone with 17.


At Moravian, the Greyhound women rallied from a ten-point halftime deficit to record an 82-71 win. The victory snaps a two-game losing streak.


The Moravian men also best Juniata, 70-61.

Lehigh men hold off Lafayette for rivalry win

When it comes to college rivalries in the area, Lehigh-Lafayette comes second to none. When it's the only big game in town, the spotlight is even brighter. The men tipped off the two-day rivalry series in Easton on Saturday.


Behind a perfect day at the free throw line and some clutch late shots, the Mountain Hawks toppled Lafayette, 75-71, at Kirby Sports Center.


Lehigh went 15-15 from the charity stripe. Austin Price led the way with 16 points, while Tim Kempton added a double-double, including a big three-pointer with less than four minutes left that made it a 5-point game.


Dan Trist paced Lafayette with 20 points. Nick Lindner had 19 points while Seth Hinrichs added 17.


Lehigh improves to 4-4 in Patriots League play. The Leopards drop to 3-5.

Lower Saucon police seek hit-and-run driver

Lower Saucon Township police are looking for a man responsible for a hit-and-run accident that occurred Friday morning in the township.


The victim told police she was traveling south on Route 412 at 7:30 a.m. Friday when a bright blue Saturn, operated by a white male in his 20s, ran the stop sign at Appleschurch Road and struck the passenger side of her vehicle.


The man who hit her continued driving north toward Hellertown.

Snow accumulations generally 4-8 inches across the area this morning. Most of the precipitation is breaking up as sleet and rain will continue to mix in. Possibly another coating to an inch on the back end of the system by early afternoon.


The activity will settle down by midday and skies will begin to clear out. Sunday will be a better day with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 30s. Clouds building back in again Sunday evening as another round of snow is possible Monday.
