Newly released numbers show that employment among Hispanics is surpassing other groups nationwide.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment among Hispanics has gone up by five percent over the past 12 months, compared to 1.4 percent for whites and 3.8 percent for blacks.
"We definitely see the same thing happening here in Pennsylvania," said Sara Goulet, press secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.
Although statistics may be deceiving because the Hispanic population in Pennsylvania is significantly smaller, Goulet said the growth is there and attributed it to a large segment of the Hispanic population settling in and calling Pennsylvania their home.
"I think it's people establishing their homes and have probably been living in Pennsylvania longer so they're a bit more established," she said.
Alan Jennings with the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley, however, said there may be other influences at work.
"My hope is that it is the work ethic argument that people are using, not the exploitation of cheaper labor," he said.
Regardless, Jennings and officials with the Department of Labor said they are pleased to see the numbers increasing and only hope the trend continues.
"To ignore the numbers because from time to time they're flawed for whatever reason, I think, is a huge mistake, and believe it or not, the people that need to be paying attention to it this is real and its good," he said.
