Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane says no criminal charges will be filed in connection with a fatal shooting by an Easton police officer.
The incident in question happened on Oct. 24, 2014, when Richard Scheuermann III led officers on a 22-minute, high-speed chase through Palmer Township, Wilson Borough and the Borough of Easton after a Palmer Township officer observed Scheuermann violating several traffic laws.
The officer had reason to suspect that Scheuermann was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
According to Kane, audio and video recordings indicated that Scheuermann, in a large pickup truck, ran multiple stop signs and red lights, drove in the wrong lanes, drove the wrong way down one-ways streets, drove over medians and curbs, drove across the lawn of Easton High School, intentionally swerved toward a pedestrian and intentionally swerved toward two police cars before the truck crashed into a utility pole at the intersection of 13th and Spring Garden streets in Easton.
The 39-year-old Wilson man was shot by unidentified police officers after he crashed his truck and rammed a police cruiser twice.
Officials said Scheuermann ignored commands from police, then stabbed himself in the neck with a pocket knife. His death was ruled a homicide.
The Attorney General's Office assumed jurisdiction of the case after a referral from Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli.
