A Philadelphia firefighter died after becoming trapped in the basement of a burning row home in the city's West Oak Lane neighborhood.

The 11-year veteran who died early Tuesday was the first female Philadelphia firefighter killed in the line of duty, according to Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer.

The firefighter was taken to Einstein Medical Center with no vital signs. She was pronounced dead a short time later, Sawyer said.

"We've suffered a tragic loss here this morning," said a tearful Mayor Michael Nutter in addressing the media at he hospital.

Officials declined to identify the firefighter or give her age, saying they've yet to notify her family, but they spoke highly of her dedication to the city.

"Very, very very good firefighter," Sawyer said. "She had a strong work ethic. She prided herself with working at busy engine companies."

The last Philadelphia firefighter killed in the line of duty was Capt. Michael Goodwin on April 6, 2013. The 53-year-old veteran died in a roof collapse while battling a fire in a three-story building in the city's Queen Village section.
