Commissioners shoot down Cedarbrook rehab center

Wednesday night marked a heated debate over the future of the Lehigh County-owned Cedarbrook Nursing Home.

The issue was over a $1.5 million dollar short term rehab project, projected to pay for itself in three years. Wednesday night two commissioners voted in favor of the project, six voted not in favor.

"The Lehigh County Board of Commissioners has no interest nor intent to sell Cedarbrook," commissioner Lisa Scheller said.

The proposed $1.5 million dollar project would convert a wing in the South Whitehall Township nursing home into a 41-bed short term rehabilitation unit.

One of the major concerns expressed for funding the project was that the rehabilitation unit would be in competition with private nursing homes.

Another major concern some commissioners expressed was that there was no guarantee the unit would be financially successful.

"We are being asked to commit public funds to a project that has not been thoroughly thought through," Scheller said.

One suggestion from commissioners was to create a task force that would study the future direction of Cedarbrook for the next four to six months. No details about that task force were disclosed at Wednesday night's meeting.
