A man is in the hospital and three police officers are on administrative leave after a shooting in Phillipsburg, New Jersey.

The Warren County prosecutor's office says man who lives on South Main Street was shot by police Monday morning.

The Warren County prosecutor's office says gunshots fired by police sent a man to the hospital in the 400 block of South Main Street in Phillipsburg.

"He came out on stretcher," said witness Kevin Hardy.

Police are not releasing the man's name, but we talked to one of his friends who went to visit him just hours before the shooting.

"I've been checking on him every weekend and then today I come down there and I find this all going on." said Michael Mosner.

The prosecutor's office says police came to the house around 9:30 a.m. Monday to do a welfare check on someone allegedly sending threatening messages.

But when officers arrived, they say they found a man holding a knife.

Hardy spotted the chaos from across the street.

"I seen the guy from the inside try and stab them from the window ledge with whatever he had in his hand it looked like a butcher knife," he said.

"Then all of sudden I hear like boom boom and I was like oh my god what was that," said witness Sylvia Arreola.

Investigators say the man wouldn't put down the knife so police shot him.

Lakeiya King lives next door and her father lives upstairs from the man who was shot by police.

King says she usually feels safe in her neighborhood but recently someone had sent her family threatening notes.

Police have not identified who was threatened in this case and they are not saying if these notes are in any way related.

The prosecutors office says three officers are now on administrative leave.

One officer was taken to the hospital, but has been treated and released.

No word on a condition of the man who was shot.
