I'm not even going to try to hide that 12;58>>Nancy: But Amber is like many college students who find themselves struggling with the distractions of social media, which leads to wasting time which leads to stress. 19 year old Steve Maas says he's guilty too.>>Steven Maas/NACC student: 11:02 Course there's been many times I'm on the couch reading my textbook, get a text, that pulls me away and then I'm like, "Let's look at Facebook or Instagram" and the next thing you know two hours went by 11:15>>Nancy: It's a common problem according to Anastasia Gioumopoulos, an adjunct Professor here at Northampton Community College and a clinical therapist. >>Anastasia Giacoumopoulos/ nacc: 16:03 They're facing anxiety. They're facing depression and it stems from trying to balance their school life, their work life, their friends and social media. 16:14 >> Amber Nelson /nacc student 13:33 i think today, not only with the social media and the distraction of everything that's on the internet, we are just constantly moving and we don't give ourselves time to just breath or relax. 13:42>> Nancy Anastasia suggests a schedule almost like a time budget. >>Anastasia Giacoumopoulos/NACC: 19:10 like an agenda, exactly writing down, everything that's required throughout your day, your lunch, your breaks your study periods 19:18 >>Nancy: She says be realistic, limit the time spent on social Media, and give yourself rewards for hard work. >>Anastasia Giacoumopoulos/NACC: 17:00 Positive rewards reinforces the behavior. 17:02>>Steven Maas/NACC student: 10:20: Mostly what i do is just set time aside to do whatever i want to do. 10:26>>Nancy: And she says learning the behavior now will lead to success in the future. >>Anastasia Giacoumopoulos/NACC:21:02 If you don't learn what's required for your job skills later on, how useful are you going to be as an employee? 21:12>>Nancy: To help manage stress, experts say young people should also limit the use of stimulants like caffeine and get enough sleep.
