Family and friends are remembering two people killed in a crash that involved several vehicles in Berks County.

A Lehigh County man and a Berks County woman were killed and nine others injured after a tractor trailer plowed into several cars on Route 222 in Maidencreek Township Wednesday morning.

Jeremy Augustine, 23, of Emmaus, and 32 year-old Jane Harakal, of Topton, both died.

"He was just down to earth, sweet, tried to make you smile, tried to make you laugh," Augustine's wife, Kim, told 69 News.

"He had a big heart," she said of her husband of almost five years. "He was really loyal and he would do anything for those that he cared about."

Augustine's stepbrother, Mark Wickline, said, "I'm proud of him for a lot of things that he's done."

Relatives said Augustine graduated from Emmaus High School in 2009 and became a military police officer in the Army. He spent about three years in Germany in that role.

"For him to do what he did, absolutely amazes me that he put himself in the position and followed through with it and did what he had to do for his country as well," said Wickline.

Augustine was most recently working for Garda, according to his family.

"He was on his way into work this morning," said Wickline.

The other victim, Jane Harakal, is also being remembered.

"She was an upbeat, friendly, sweet person," said neighbor Sloane Radcliffe.

Harakal spent her life serving others as a nurse at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bern Township.

Radcliffe said Harakal was a great neighbor who always had a big smile on her face. She had a husband and two young sons and would often offer to take Radcliffe's son to kindergarten because her son was the same age.

"I don't know why horrible things happen to wonderful people," said Radcliffe. "She was a great help to us and will certainly be missed."

As loved ones cope with the sudden loss, they are cherishing memories.

Wickline said, "Always remember his smile. Even when he was down he would smile sometimes."

Kim Augustine said, "Just a really, really good person."
