Thanksgiving Eve snow prompts some to change travel plans

Transportation officials have urged travelers to change their plans ahead of snow on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

The timing of the storm could create a traffic nightmare as people head out for the holiday.

From Interstate 78 to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, millions of drivers are expected to travel through Berks County over the Thanksgiving holiday. Now, with winter weather expected Wednesday, drivers are racing to beat the storm.

"We're excited about the snow but we're afraid of being caught up in traffic," said Christina Jealfrancois, who was driving from Florida to Boston with her family.

Many drivers left extra early Tuesday to try and get off the roads before the snow.

"I was able to wake up early, leave the hotel and head to New York, and I'll be there just ahead of the storm," said Annemarie Albergo, who was traveling from Virginia.

PennDOT said the storm is coming at the worst time. Officials encouraged drivers to change their travel plans because they said when you throw in snow on top of the added holiday volume, it makes their job even harder.

Crews spent Tuesday prepping the equipment and preparing for possibly the first significant snowfall.

"We plan on having crews in place Wednesday morning early and we'll be there throughout the storm and we already have plans if we need to be here during the holiday," said Rick Stone, Berks County manager for PennDOT.
