A Glendon Borough councilman got a cold shoulder from Palmer Township supervisors Monday night when he asked if the township would be interested in signing a multi-year contract that would provide Glendon with fire department protection.
Glendon, a small borough buckling under heavy financial strains that have included a doubling of its taxes in 2010, currently has a contract with Easton, at $16,000 a year, for fire protection.
Glendon Borough council member Ronald Roscioli told Palmer supervisors that someone from Palmer contacted Glendon officials about the possibility of entering a contract, at $7,000 per year with a two-percent increase every year over five years.
David Colver, the chairman of the board of supervisors, said that was news to him and promised to find out where that idea originated.
No one on the board supported the idea.
Colver said Palmer has been asked in the past by other municipalities, including West Easton, to provide police protection and all those requests were turned down.
On an average year Palmer has about 600 fire calls, Colver said, adding he believed the township's fire trucks should serve Palmer.
All departments, however, have what are called "mutual aide" agreements, where all departments will respond, if needed, to a major fire.
Roscioli said Glendon only has to sign the three-year contract Easton is offering to continue fire protection service in the borough, which has about 36 fire calls a year.
