The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has launched a voluntary registration system for people attempting to hike the entire trail.
The conservancy said the goal is to protect the 2,185-mile-long trail from overcrowding, which can result in trampled vegetation, an accumulation of trash and unsanitary conditions.
Regional director Morgan Sommerville said hikers need to spread out along the trail.
"With a large number of new hikers expected along the Appalachian Trail in 2015 and 2016, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy hopes that this new voluntary thru-hike registration system will allow hikers to know in advance when overcrowding along the trail will exist, and then adjust a thru-hike start date to his or her advantage," Sommerville said.
Thru-hikers can register on the conservancy's website.
The conservancy said the system doesn't guarantee spaces along the trail and it's not a substitute for any required permits.
The trail runs from Georgia to Maine. One of the trail's most popular sections is the Pinnacle in Berks County.
