Do you make a “to-do” list for the day? Well some say you should have a list that includes more than errands.
Many successful people say you should create a list for the New Year with personal, professional and financial goals that you can strive for.
They say making a list is the first step toward reaching your goals.
One local author, Tom (TE) Corner of Broomall, Delaware County, believes so much in this idea that he wrote a children’s book, "List for Santa, Life for Life" to help kids get started formulating and writing down their goals early in life.
Children everywhere just had some experience with list writing in their annual plea to Santa.
Most kids know if they make a list and check it twice at Christmas time- they might just get what they want under the tree.
Corner decided to borrow on this idea to get kids excited about the list writing ideas he uses to reach his goals.
And of course, he once wrote down on one of his lists that he wanted to write a book one day.
"I didn't write down I wanted to write "List for Santa, List for Life", I said I wanted to write a book and then I got specific. I was passionate about it and you know when you get something in your mind that you're excited about, you don't let it go," says Corner.
Corner, who works in sales, believes writing down his goals has helped him tremendously in his personal and professional life.
In fact, he writes down his goals on his computer, a small journal and his phone.
He makes goals for everything from his career, vacations to how much money he'll need to put his three daughters through college.
"It's very mind boggling when you write these things down but the more you keep them front and center, the more likely it is that these dreams will come to being."
Corner says making lists helps you clarify what you want and motivates you to take action.
He says it's simple:
* Don't get overwhelmed
* Don't be intimidated
* Write whatever comes to mind.
"I would say start general, let it flow and then revisit it at least once a month, if not weekly."
He says reevaluating goals is key to obtaining them.
"Life changes and things that I want or anybody else wants changes, so keep it simple and once that idea hits you then go specific."
Experts say if you are going to write down your goals, remember to think about how you’ll celebrate your successes and include that on your list too.
