Rain moves through on Saturday with cloudy skies Sunday

Today: Areas of fog this morning; cloudy with rain tapering to a few showers in the afternoon. High: 50

Tonight: Mostly cloudy (a shower in spots). Low: 38

Sunday: Variable cloudiness with a shower in spots; breezy (wet snowflakes mixed in, especially Poconos). High: 48 Low: 30

Steady rain continues through the morning and into the afternoon before tapering to showers as we head into the evening hours. Cloudy skies through the day but temperatures will still reach 50 degrees in many locations later this afternoon. Lingering showers may be around into Sunday, but most of the day will be dry. There will also be a mixture of clouds and sunshine as highs top out in the upper 40s. Winds will also be gusting out of the northwest on Sunday, which will definitely make it feel colder outside.

Most locations will pick up between a half an inch and an inch of rain from this event. Since the ground is already saturated and streams and creeks are running high, we'll need to keep an eye on flooding. Ponding on area roadways and flooding in poor drainage areas may also be a problem.

Monday, highs in the mid 50s with rain possible at night and a couple of rain showers around on Tuesday as temperatures fall back down into the mid 40s.

DEP investigating E. coli in Marion Twp.

Residents in Marion Township are voicing their concerns after discovering severe water contamination at their homes.

"These levels are breathtaking and that is not just my opinion, that is a fact by the federal guidelines," said Delona Scholten, a mother of three in Marion Township.

Delona Scholten is in disbelief looking at the water sample results from her kitchen sink.

Scholten lives in an old farmhouse in Marion Township with her three children and a fourth on the way.

Her home has a creek running beside it and Scholten believes that foaming dark water is what is carrying dangerous levels of E. coli and coliform bacteria into her well.

"I am getting ready to have a baby. I mean these are deadly bacteria. This is America, it is not a third world country. We should not have to deal with this. It should not be this extreme," said Scholten.

Scholten was first alerted to the problem Monday when her neighbors called in a panic warning her not to let her children brush their teeth or bathe in the water.

Her water tests reveal she has nearly 200 times the amount of coliform and E. coli in her water, both dangerous bacteria that can cause illness or even death.

This has been a reoccurring problem in this section of Marion Township and longtime residents believe the bacteria is caused by farmers putting down manure prematurely on frozen ground.

But both last year when 69 News did the story and this year, the township nor state agencies could confirm the cause.

Officials with the PA Department of Environmental Protection tell us it is an ongoing investigation and they cannot comment further.

For the time being, the Scholten family is left without any usable water to drink or bathe in.

Scholten says she wants answers not only for the well being of her family, but for her neighbors and the wildlife in the area.

"It is a constant issue wherever it is coming from and it needs to be resolved," said Scholten.

Saints focused heading state showdown with West Perry

Berks Catholic heads out Central Dauphin East on Saturday for a state quarterfinal showdown with fellow District 3 opponent West Perry.

The Saints have been playing at a high level since a loss to Conrad Weiser in the District tournament. The Scouts are also in the state quarterfinals and will meet Honesdale on Saturday.

Berks Catholic entered the season as one of the favorites in Berks County and District 3. The Saints have plenty of wins, but have yet to come up with a championship.

The Saints head into Saturday with the momentum to take another step towards achieving that goal.
