Berks County community leaders, residents rally in support of police

For months people have shown their outrage after there were no charges filed for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Riots have sprung up in Ferguson, Missouri, New York and chants could even be heard on the streets of Reading.

According to police, Garner's death led to the killing of two NYPD officers.

The recent events prompted leaders in Berks County to take on the challenge of turning negative public reaction to police into positive energy.

"They really are on the front lines of protecting us and making sure there is law versus lawlessness," Pa. Sen. Judy Schwank, D-Berks County, said.

Saturday, dozens of leaders and residents from Berks County gathered in Reading's City Park for a pro-police rally.

"They're encouraging municipalities businesses, homes to take blue ribbons to put them around a telephone poll, your mailbox," Berks County Commissioner, Christian Leinbach said. "Make it clear that we unequivocally stand with law enforcement here in Berks County."

There were calls to pray for officers and to be respectful to officers, all with the goal of setting a good example for the next generation. It was a day for the community to let law enforcement know how much they appreciate all that they do for their safety and security.
