They may be four-legged and furry, but in Upper Macungie Township the K-9 patrol is true blue.
The township's board of supervisors voted 3-0 Thursday night to provide a $1,500 annual stipend to care for retired police dogs.
"I do think there needs to be a cap," said Police Chief Edgardo Colon of the amount, but added the money will help pay for their veterinarian bills and meals.
Currently the township has two retired police dogs named Pako, who retired on February 6 at the board of supervisors' meeting due to a training injury, and Hassan.
The dogs live with their handlers once they hang up their badges.
In other business, supervisors approved the sale of a 1995 fire truck, formerly known as Fogelsville 811 for $65,000 to a volunteer fire company in West Virginia.
Supervisors also granted permission to hire a finance director, put the township's three-year grass cutting contract out to bid, and confirmed the hiring of a new police officer, David Malischewski and office administrator Cindy Yaskowski.
In other announcements Thursday night, Chairman Jim Brunell noted that the township's planning commission will conduct a public hearing March 9 on the request of Liberty Property Trust for two proposed warehouses - 1.1 million and 1 million square feet - on the property commonly known as 700 and 800 Mill Creek Road, located west of Mill Creek Road, south of the Route 222 by-pass and north of Hamilton Boulevard.
